Handsfree 2

Hands Free is a night about software doing things. Musicians and programmers come together in duets between instrumentalists and pieces of software, along with other experiments in autonomy. software, along with other experiments in autonomy. This month (Feb 2010) Hands Free will feature software works by Arne Eigenfeldt, Oliver Hancock, Michael Young, Ross Bencina and me, Ollie Bown, featuring performances by Brigid Burke, Adrian Sherriff and Jeremy Marozeau.

The international software artists are not present (not even tele) just their software .

Brigid plays with ollies software, neither seems to trust the other the way good impro performers do, to allowing something bigger than either of them to emerge.

.......

Adrian, brigid and ollie combine next.  The humans manage some basic levels of coherence in atmosphere and themes, the software is again and unforgiving partner, though I am starting tosee it is a phenomenon of its upbrining (ie rehearsing with the same humans or others with similar styles and tastes). Given the size of the audience (half performers tonight) this is probably a close knit group of academics.

Ross and his audiomulch; (and wineglass)
Ross wrote the program, thepatch and now provides the stimulus this is a one augmented man show (just imagine when this is on your phone and changes the way you hear the city/datasphere).  Haunting rythmic resonance, eventually augment by broken beats of clashing glasses. Improved immensly by the subtle use of amp so we can hear the source sounds clearly in the gallery space.  I have heard audiomulch used to make my ears bleed, nice tohear the creator has a subtle touch,  very different use of glass tothat I saw at horsebazaar a few weeks ago.

Penultimately we have jeremy and onny eigenfeldt
Here the software has I believe accpeted its limitations and chosen to provide the more easily appreciated and incorporated role of providing a percussion track generated from the live performance.... wait I spoke to soon, the've swapped roles (after a bit oftoe twiddling of sliders)

Michael youngs piano software and brigid's bass clarinet
The software is designed to augment piano.  Though it doesn't seem as limited to response only (as most previous ones were) as it began without brigid (withapretty scattered intro). The melowness of the wind instrument definately calmed it down, almost to sinister.
